Techno-Anxiety is a phrase that was first uttered in 1985. The name of this blog is a play on that phrase along with the movie title, "High Anxiety," which is one of my favorite Mel Brooks' productions.
Along with associates in 1985 (while studying Computer Science at Purdue University), a colleague and I conducted a workshop, entitled "Tehcno-Anxiety: The fear that can undermine your career success." I was really just a kid at that time. <g> A Google Search turns up a few references for the phrase technoanxiety.
More than 2 decades have passed by. I am still a technophile after all these years! As I continue exploring topics of the "high technology" arena1, I will post my results (successes and failures) here for three purposes. The primary purpose is to maintain the information for myself; the secondary purpose is to explore blogging; the final purpose is that it may be beneficial to others. I truly have my doubts about that last purpose though. <g>
So, with that intro, the gauntlet has been thrown down. (Yes, I know, I'll be picking it up myself!)
1 I am not quite sure where the tangent between high technology and low technology lies. I would be happy to hear from anyone who can define it.

The Institution of Marriage
(An Essay in Progress)
What constitutes a marriage? This is a question with which the American mass media is wrestling. If we agree that the media is simply reporting on the actions of American society, then we must conclude that, indeed, American society is wrestling -- with itself -- about the institution known as marriage.
The social sciences (Sociology, Political Science, Economics) are charged with defining the terms associated with collective societal behavior. [continue discussion of social sciences here]
I am not a social scientist... not an economist... not a politician... not a sociologist... What could I possibly add to this collective societal discussion on marriage? What can I possibly say, that has not already been said? Why should I care to speak on behalf of either side of the argument?
Allow me to answer the last question first. As a citizen of the United States, I believe that the ultimate responsibility of each citizen is threefold:
- to learn our common history;
- to understand how we have reached the present moment; and
- to affect our collective future.
In a free society such as ours, it is imperative that citizens understand the burden of citizenship. It causes me great grief to observe citizens who are so quick to condemn illegal aliens in our country; but, that is the extent of their (the citizens) involvement -- to complain in arenas where their voice is unheard, or ineffective. I like to call these citizens the "legal aliens." Although they are "legally present," they are "alien" insofar as they have shirked one or more of the three responsibilities of citizenship.
For the purpose of this essay, the use of the term "citizen" ignores aliens, legal or otherwise. In this essay, we shall presume that where the term "citizen" is used, it refers to those citizens who have accepted their duties of citizenship as highlighted previously.
